I Went to a Garden Party: Recipes for a Killer Country Barbecue Party

Heidi Newfield
Ingredients:
1 part Bacardi Peach
Fresh-cut peaches
4 parts Diet Sprite
Ice

Directions: Put the Bacardi in a blender with ice and fresh-cut peaches. Add the Diet Sprite and blend.

"I always start grilling by thinking what my favorite summertime adult beverage is, and this year I have a new one. It is a great and pretty low-calorie drink to start grilling with," says Newfield.

We like her idea of starting of the grilling chores with a refreshing drink. It just seems to click perfectly; kind of like "Johnny and June." This drink is the perfect combination of invigorating refreshment plus a little kick. Adding fresh peaches ups the delicious factor and makes us want to whip this one up — even if we don't have a barbecue party planned!

Heidi Newfield Recalls Otherwordly Visit From Late Mom

Whether or not you believe in the supernatural, Heidi Newfield's own ghost story is sure to touch your heart.

The singer's beloved mother passed away in 2004 after suffering from multiple sclerosis for several years. Heidi, who was devastated to lose her mom at such a young age, began her difficult grieving process, feeling such a profound loss that she wasn't sure how she could cope with this tremendous hole in her life.

About a month after her mom passed away, Heidi was sleeping in her house in West Nashville when she was suddenly awakened. "I felt this presence in the room," she tells The Boot, "and I opened up my eyes and shifted my head to make sure I was truly awake. There was sort of this white [aberration] ... you couldn't make out a face. It was sort of like this cloud. I kept blinking my eyes to make sure they weren't playing tricks on me as they'll often do in the night. It was like this presence came around the side of my bed.

Heidi Newfield Has Fan Excitment Fueling Her Next Album

Heidi Newfield will have plenty to remember from the Country Throwdown tour.

And she's not just talking about the dance parties, fan visits and other esprit de corps moments on the road, but also the song ideas that have come her way thanks to the kinship and brainstorming among performers and songwriters that was an integral part of the tour.

"My good friend Bob McKenzie (a Nashville singer-songwriter) has been with us and sometimes we'll sit down in the bus and just start writing," Heidi told The Boot backstage at a Throwdown tour stop in Virginia. "I probably have three albums worth of material now... Bobby says this is where the songs are, and he's right!"

It's also where the fans were, as evidenced by the thousands who flocked to the tour to hear Heidi, Jamey Johnson, Montgomery Gentry, Little Big Town, Jack Ingram, Eric Church, Buxton Hughes and several other country crooners. What surprised Heidi the most was the number of Country Throwdown fans who not only know the songs from her 2008 album, 'What Am I Waiting For,' but also from her upcoming album.

The album, which Heidi is working on with multi-Grammy Award winning producer Blake Chancey (Dixie Chicks, Montgomery Gentry, Waylon Jennings) is about two-thirds complete and fan response to the new songs she played on the tour has made Heidi especially eager to release it.

"It's such a joy," Heidi gushed. "I get jacked up when the crowd is jacked up. I feed off of their energy -- and so does my band -- just as much as they feed off of mine. When we see them pumping their fists in the air and mouthing all the words -- even to brand new material -- it's incredible."

Two of the hot new songs Heidi debuted on the Country Throwdown tour are 'Born Too Late,' which she likens to a "Waylonesque traditional tune" that tells how the singer often feels she was born in the wrong era, and the power ballad, 'Why'd You Have To Be So Good?'

"I literally see people weeping in the crowd," Heidi said of fans' response to the ballad. "They never heard this song before, but you know you are affecting them with it ... When you are playing brand new material for an audience and you see them respond to it, you know when it's working and when it's not."

Heidi said that although The Country Throwdown tour was a new concept for country artists, they quickly developed bonds that she predicts will last for the remainder of their careers. "It has a very fresh, exciting vibe to it," she noted. "I think the camaraderie is what we will miss the most. We've built a lot of great relationships out here."

Throwdown Tour Review from KKAJ-FM

“I got back into the arena to catch the end of the Eli Young Band’s set, then headed back over to the theater to take in Heidi Newfield’s show on the Outlaw Stage. That girl knows how to rock. There’s no doubt that she should have been playing the Main Stage. The crowd watching her was by far the biggest of the day for the Outlaw or Bluebird stages. She rolled through her hits like “Johnny & June” and “Cry, Cry (‘Til the Sun Shines),” and threw in some new material and old Trick Pony material as well. She made a vow to sign autographs and take pictures with every single person who wanted to meet her, and she stayed true to her word. She seems like a very genuine person and I was honored to meet her.” –Kristi, 95.7 KKAJ FM

Country Throwndown Tour Recap

Heidi Newfield is a country music artist who was lead singer for the group Trick Pony, alongside Keith Burns and Ira Dean from 1996 until 2006, when she left in pursuit of a solo career. Newfield has begun her solo career on Curb Records, debuting in 2008 with the single, "Johnny & June."

CB: I think I had heard an interview that you had lived with Johnny and June Carter Cash?
HN: I actually never lived with them. Ira Dean, my partner in Trick Pony, was friends with them and he introduced me to them and without him I would never have had the privilege to work and record with John and meet June and spend so much time with them.
CB: They helped a lot of people starting out in Nashville.
HN: If you think about how that entire generation came up, the movies glamorize it, but it was the epitome of not glamour. Johnny always told stories about how they would make more room in the car by duct taping the bass to the roof. Not the bus, not the motor home, but the car. That is how they traveled back then driving themselves to every show in their car. When we started out in Trick Pony, we drove ourselves across the country in a van and a trailer to all the shows for 4.5 years. There is something to be said for paying your dues like that. It makes those of us who have worked really hard to get anywhere really appreciate it and stop bitching. It makes you appreciate the milestones and the history.

CB: It has changed so much in the 10-15 years.
HN: It has, and in some ways it's good because country music has broadened its horizons, but I also appreciate the traditions.

CB: What is your favorite song to perform live on stage?
HN: That’s a hard one. It really depends on your mood at the time or what is happening on stage. There is usually a magical moment on stage. There is a new song on my album coming out this fall called “Textin Texas” that is really fun to sing right now. The other night I sang with Jamey Johnson onstage with an old Waylon tune called “Don’t Think Hank Done it This Way” and it was amazing and like a religious experience on stage. It was like we went to church. “Poor Me” is always a favorite. I think people forget that I sang it so it is usually fun to start the set.

CB: Personal question. I travel 100 percent of the time away from home and I know you are on the road all the time. How do you stay close to your husband? Any tips?
HN: Absolutely: communication. Back in the era of Johnny Cash, there were no cell phones or computers, but with today’s technology there is no excuse not to communicate and get in touch with somebody. Even if it is as impersonal as texting, I take 5 minutes and send a text to my husband and tell him that I am thinking about him before I go on stage. We usually try to talk in the mornings and before we go to bed each night. Communication is key. You have to take the time no matter what and know that nothing is more important than reaching out to that person.
CB: Who would be your dream collaborations?
HN: It’s hard to answer with just one. Bonnie Raitt is one. I have always been a fan of the blues and her history is so cool growing up in a Broadway family and her following the blues from a young age. Her story is similar to mine. I grew up in California listening to Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn and Marty Robbins. Something grabbed me. I started listening to Muddy Waters and Little Walter so I picked up a harmonica. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers would be another one. On the country side, I would love to work with Jamey Johnson. Our voices blend well. We’ve talked about it and I dig what he does, so if we found the right song I would love to work with him.

CB: What’s your writing process?
HN: You never stop looking around. It can come from something you read, a line in a movie, or something someone says. I learned the hard way that you will forget even if you think you will never forget the perfect line. You will forget it. I’ve learned to get up and write it down or play it in garage band. I think things just come to you or you hear something that reminds you of something else that brings out a melody..A lot of times if you get an idea for a hook and it has a direction. It may sound bluesy or be a country ballad or be a rocker song. This is also why collaboration is so important because you can throw ideas off each other and they may come up with something that you would not think of or take it into a direction that you may have never gone.

Country Throwdown throws down gauntlet

Founders and producers of Vans Warped Tour take first stab at doing the same thing for country artists.
The Vans Warped Tour has become one of the longest-running and most popular music festivals in the United States, and founder Kevin Lyman began the tour back in 1995 -- in Utah.
Lyman said the first Warped Tour show was at Saltair, with paid attendance of 750.
His newest venture is the Country Throwdown tour, which debuts this summer, visiting Usana Amphitheatre on Saturday, June 12. "It's the Warped Tour," he said, "for a different crowd."
The tour has suffered some setbacks, with recent Oscar-winner Ryan Bingham (for Best Original Song "The Crazy Kind") dropping out of the tour. In addition, there have been show cancellations in Houston, Dallas, San Diego and Phoenix because of low ticket sales. "Year One is not about making money, it's about surviving," Lyman said.
Even without Bingham, the tour includes acts such as Montgomery Gentry, Jack Ingram, Little Big Town, Heidi Newfield and the Eli Young Band, in what is billed as a first-of-its-kind traveling festival for country performers.
Newfield, 39, was lead singer, rhythm guitarist and harmonica player for the group Trick Pony between 1996 and 2006, and is readying her second album, the follow-up to her 2008 solo debut "What Am I Waiting For."
Lyman has told performers they should expect some hiccups on the first tour.
One of the best things about the festival, Newfield said, is that it shows that country isn't a small genre. "We've been trying to scream it from the rafters for 10 years [that country isn't cookie-cutter]. We have a diversity here," she said, adding: "It's really cool that there are some of us out there who give a damn about our traditions."
Eli Young Band drummer Chris Thompson said what he likes about the tour is that there is never a dull moment, with no breaks between music all day long. "There's so much to do, you're never at a loss," he said. "The way the time slots are, you're never competing with other bands."
The tour runs like clockwork, he said, with his band starting at 4:25 p.m. each tour date and playing for 40 minutes. "Everyone gets 40-50 minutes," he said.
"There have been a lot of rock bands who have done this, but not country," Thompson said. "It's a pretty wild adventure."

Jack Ingram Throws a Throwdown Dance Party

Jack Ingram's good-natured antics on the Country Throwdown tour have upped the fun quotient for everyone on the trek. Just ask Heidi Newfield. She was curled up in her bus chatting with friends when the driver started to pull out of a venue's parking lot.

"The convoy was just about to go down the road and Jack's bus stopped right in front of mine, blocking it," Heidi tells The Boot. "Then he and and Bobby [McKenzie, a Nashville songwriter] came over to my bus and said, 'Get your pillow, get your duffel bag, and get your butt over here. We're having a dance party.'"

When Heidi protested saying she would stay on her bus with "my dog and my peeps, they said 'Get your pillow. Get your duffel bag and get over here. We're having a dance party!' I went and got my pillow and my duffel bag and I'm so glad I did. We stayed up all night and danced and we had the best time. You haven't lived until you two-stepped while [the bus is] going down the road and around curves."

Fans aren't left out of the fun either. On a recent stop, some were so preoccupied playing games while tailgating, they almost missed chatting with Jack and some other performers.

The fun started when Jack, Heather Morgan and others climbed into a golf cart and drove to the fans' parking lot at one venue. After trying to strike up a conversation with a few fans, Jack finally asked if they were "going to see the show by that Jack Ingram guy." One fan finally looked up. "That's when she took a close look and started to realize who he was," Heather tells The Boot.

Jack then told the fan, "That's great. I'm Jack Ingram," before driving off with a wave to the squealing group.

From The Boot.

HEIDI NEWFIELD TALKS JACK

As the inaugural Country Throwdown Tour continues its trek across the U.S., there’s no doubt the roster’s country celebs are out on the road kickin’ back, cuttin’ loose and getting the change to make music together like never before. “It’s such a cool experience to be able to hang out with my friends on the bus by day and hop on stage with them to perform by night,” said Curb recording artist Heidi Newfield of her on-stage jam session with Jack Ingram last weekend in Bristow, VA. “Jack’s such a cool guy… not to mention a phenomenal musician — I was honored to have the opportunity to sing along with him as he tore up the guitar,” said Heidi. Newfield performs her leg of the tour at 3:55 p.m. from the Outlaws Stage each date.
Country Throwdown Interview

(CSC) 1. Great to chat with you again. It’s so wonderful to see you out here on the Country Throwdown tour. What has been the most thrilling part about the tour so far?

(Heidi Newfield)

Well I think the most thrilling thing about this tour is their kind of coloring outside the box a little bit. They’re trying something new and they’re fitting three days worth of a festival into one full day of music. It’s really cool to be a part of something that is new and fresh and exciting. I think right now people need that. It’s cool to be a part of something that you’re building too. We’ve already become sort of a family out here. So aside from seeing all my friends and peers, I think it’s just being a part of something I feel is going to be really huge.

(CSC) 2. Your recent album “What Am I Waiting For” has experienced great commercial success! When do you plan to release a follow up?

(Heidi Newfield)

Actually I’ve been working and writing like crazy on that for this past year particularly. There were already some songs written before the last record I did with Tony Brown, the first solo album, that had reared their heads again and just sort of like you go back and revisit those songs. So now I’ve got songs enough written for about three records and we’re just picking through the gems on those and we’ll have a fall release with a summer single. But it should always be about the music and the fans. That’s really what I’m focusing on.

from The Greenroom
Multi-platinum country music star Dierks Bentley announced today the next wave of artists participating in his fourth annual "Miles & Music for Kids" celebrity motorcycle ride and concert Sunday, Oct. 11 in Nashville. Joining Bentley and previously announced Capitol Nashville label-mates Darius Rucker and Eric Church will be Wynonna, Heidi Newfield and Michelle Branch.

For the first time in the event's history, "Miles & Music" will provide an afternoon tailgating experience with live music, food and family fun on the river before the Tennessee Titans take on the Indianopolis Colts later that evening.

"My idea of the perfect Sunday afternoon includes live music, motorcycles, beer and football...but you also have to have girls...can't forget about them," laughs Bentley. "It's awesome that Wynonna, Michelle and Heidi want to come help us raise some money that day...it should be a blast."

Tickets start at $20 and are still available for the ride and concert through Ticketmaster. The ride departs Cool Springs Harley Davidson at 1:00pm CT and will travel through beautiful Williamson County and downtown Nashville, culminating in a jam session at Riverfront Park. In the three previous years, "Miles & Music for Kids" has raised over $500,000 for the Monroe Carell Jr. Childrens Hospital at Vanderbilt.

This year, Bentley has joined forces with Nationwide Insurance, CMT ONE COUNTRY and the Children's Miracle Network to expand the successful "Miles & Music for Kids" event to six cities across the country in 2009 and 2010, with all proceeds benefiting Children's Miracle Network hospitals in those areas.

Heidi Newfield Drops Out of the 5th Grade

Last night on “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” Heidi Newfield played for the National MS Society. Citing her mother’s battle with MS, she wanted to play for a charity that was close to her heart. Throughout the grade school test, Heidi answered most of the questions herself, but she did lose some money early on when she got a question about the Louisiana Purchase wrong and then tried to cheat off the paper of a classmate for another question. Trying to help Heidi, the young student had answered an elementary question about world geography with what looked like a misspelling. However, when Jeff Foxworthy questioned him as to the intent of his answer, he stated what sounded like a completely different sea and was therefore marked incorrect. So with incorrect answers, she was never going to reach the $25,000 level; but she could have answered the bonus question about ancient history to try to increase the pot to $140,000. Instead, Heidi chose to drop out of school and walk away with $14,000 to fund research to cure Multiple Sclerosis.

Heidi Newfield Sings Praises of Going Solo

from theboot.com

Heidi Newfield has her own list of reasons for going solo. "I have all this room to record the songs I love and work the stage the way I want to work it," she tells The Boot. "I really like it better!"

The singer has also found validation in making the move from the trio Trick Pony to her solo gig. "The fans have been wonderfully supportive to me now that I'm out on my own. It's great to see Trick Pony fans mixed in with my new fans. And my peers in Nashville have been great also. I admit, when I was thinking about this I wondered, 'Will the industry embrace me? Will they get this and like what I'm gonna do?' It was scary to jump off the edge and leave the safety net behind."

Heidi certainly got industry validation at the ACM Awards this year, where she scored five nominations. But she insists she is just now scratching the surface of what is to come in her career.

"We're just starting to talk about the next album," she reports. "I have a lot of music to be sung and songs to write in my new career."

The singer says she sometimes feels pressure when thinking about her sophomore project. But in the end, it's all about making great music, taking care of her fans and having a great live show.

"If you can do those things, the rest will come. I came up the old school way with a grassroots kind of thing, playing every club, honky-tonk, church, rodeo or basketball game. Then I moved it up and have grown to where I am today, so I want to see it continue to thrive. I feel like I'm on my way to doing that, and if I keep the focus on cutting great music and my live show, then the celebrity and radio success will come."

Where's a ShamWow when you need it?

The USA TodayHeidi Newfield used CMA Fest to signal Thursday's launch of her fan club. "I wanted to wait until I got on my feet and really got some music out there that people recognized, and to make it a little bit more special," she says. But even though she's fairly new to the solo artist thing (she's formerly of Trick Pony), she's got years of experience with the autograph pen and a quick answer to the most difficult surface on which to leave her mark.

"A sweaty head is the hardest thing to sign," Newfield says. "Sharpie just won't stay on a sweaty, shaved head."
