Heidi Newfield Decorates Her Own Home

Heidi Newfield nad Bill Johnson bring themselves into the decorating process.

It’s practically unheard of in this day and age for anyone with celebrity bona fides to actually decorate her own house, but that didn’t stop singer Heidi Newfield. Moreover, the results of her decorating efforts constitute a genuine, thoughtful act—far from being a show biz showplace, she’s clearly committed to making the Franklin house she shares with her husband, NFL agent Bill Johnson, a home. The minute you step onto the front porch, you know this isn’t a place a pro has been called in to fix up for the media to visit, and that’s a wonderful thing. Beyond being lovely, it’s refreshingly real.

The front porch, with its brick floors and white wooden posts, protects a heavy front door with gas carriage lamps on either side, while a rustic gardener’s table simply decorated with a few potted plants immediately makes the home welcoming. The opposite end of the porch combines contemporary wicker outdoor furniture with a vintage wooden wardrobe set in front of round-topped picture windows with plantation shutters, creating a casual, distinct visiting space, and hinting at what Heidi and Bill have done with their home. There, too, you’ll find a mix of vintage, antique and contemporary, of the chic tastefully mixed with the unpretentious.

“This is the first house we’ve had together, and I moved here from a tiny place in Sylvan Park,” says Heidi, referencing the much larger space she had to fill here. Decorating this house was a new experience, each of them bringing personal possessions that spoke intimately of who they were with the intention of creating a home. “I imagined the colors even before the walls were really up,” Heidi laughs. “Even when it was just standing lumber, I already saw these warm, gold walls.”

If there are signature words for the decor, “warm” is definitely number one on the list, followed immediately by “alive” and “light.” That’s an oversimplification, but each of those terms can be appropriately applied to every space. Constantly at hand are elements of the owners’ personalities. If you don’t know that Bill grew up in coastal Carolina and Heidi on a horse farm in northern California, the decor offers you the chance to make an educated guess. Earthy, saturated color is everywhere.

Intriguing art is everywhere in the house, all of it selected because the couple loved it—nothing was bought because they needed to put something in a given spot. Scattered about on the glowing hardwoods are hand-made Turkish rugs, purchased there while Heidi was entertaining the troops abroad. Musical instruments, some obviously regularly used, others vintage or antique, dominate the decor in the adjoining music and dining rooms, just through the front door. Upstairs, where Bill keeps a home office, hang a proliferation of modern shadowboxes cleanly framing football jerseys and sports memorabilia.

The entryway’s golden yellow, stuccoed walls immediately draw focus. It’s impossible to speculate about which trendy Nashville gallery provided what in this house, because none of them did a thing. Instead, you’ll find combinations like a contemporary light wood dining room table paired with darker wood chairs with leather seats that once belonged to Bill’s grandparents. Throughout the house, pieces that once belonged to other family members are visible—there was no rush, and indeed, no desire, to replace them with something more faddish.

“We decided not to bring in any professional decorators,” says Heidi. “Everything here means something to us, and we just let the rooms tell us what they needed as we used them. It’s worked fairly well so far.” With both of them on the road so often, they knew whatever they called home needed to be a place for kicking off shoes, playing with the dog and relaxing every chance they got..

Dierks Bentley Celebrates Fifth Annual Miles & Music For Kids

More than 1200 motorcycle enthusiasts and country music fans lined up for miles behind Dierks Bentley on Sunday, October 17, for a common cause — helping children in need. The occasion was Dierks’ annual Miles & Music for Kids, a bike ride that snaked the backroads from Columbia, Tenn. to Nashville’s Riverfront Park, culminating in a concert featuring country stars who were happy to come out for the cause. At the end of the evening, a check for $250,990 was turned over to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University.

For those who have never seen a charity motorcycle ride, the scene of more than a thousand bikes lined up in one place is quite exciting. Plus, it’s humbling to know that this many people would take time on a Sunday afternoon to come out to do something that helps kids and their families whom the riders will never get to know.

Dierks has a daughter, Evie, who is nearly two. He tells The Boot that the ride has taken on new meaning since he has a child of his own. He and his wife, Cassidy, are expecting their second child this December. “We are fortunate to have a healthy daughter, and we pray that our second child will be healthy as well,” he says. “These families who have children in the hospital, they need to only have to worry about their child getting well, not where the next money is coming from.

“Country music artists have taken an interest in kids, including St. Jude’s and what Rascal Flatts has done for Vanderbilt. It’s great to be able to help do something for the kids and their families when they have to deal with life-threatening situations.”

Heidi Newfield was showing off her new toy at the ride, a pink custom-made bike from Demented Cycles in Texas. Unfortunately she was not able to ride the new motorcycle because it needed a little fine tuning before she took it on the road. The singer has only been riding a couple years, but says she loves the freedom it affords her.

“When you are out riding you have to be so attentive to the safety of yourself and those around you, yet your mind can just be free and not think about anything,” Heidi tells The Boot. “When I’m riding I don’t think about my music, writing songs or my concert tour. I’m just out there enjoying being on the road and not having to worry about anything.”

Others who joined Dierks on the ride were Craig Campbell, who said it was an honor to be asked to be part of the event, and Ira Dean, a former partner with Heidi in Trick Pony.

Shortly after arrival at Riverfront Park, music became the main focus as DIerks took to the stage to welcome a multitude of friends who were there to sing for the cause. Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Del McCoury, Heidi Newfield, Jerrod Niemann, Mat Kearney and Laura Bell Bundy joined Dierks to perform for more than 5,000 fans, many of whom bought tickets for the concert part of the event to help the cause.

This past year, Dierks took Miles & Music for KIds on the road, expanding to cities including Phoenix, Ariz.; Seattle, Wa.; Atlanta, Ga.; Dallas, Texas and Chicago, Ill. He hopes to expand to other cities next year. “We were very happy with the other rides,” Dierks says, “and that we were able to help hospitals in those cities as well as Vanderbilt in Nashville.”

Miles & Music for Kids has raised over $1.5 million for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta and Seattle.

Dierks Nearly Doubles Riders At Bike Rally

Dierks Bentley said he knew this year’s “Miles & Music For Kids” event was bigger the second he pulled up to the Harley dealership yesterday.

“I got my Flip camera out and I was filming the bikes as we drove up here. All those bikes!” Dierks told Country Weekly.

Dierks’ event has drawn about 700 bikers through Middle Tennessee in years past. But organizers estimated there were between 1,000 and 1,500 bikers for this year, the fifth in Nashville, with final numbers expected later today.

“More and more bikes every year. The support from the community is always a surprise. You never know what to expect in this business. I’m really pleasantly surprised at this turnout,” Dierks said.

The ride culminated with a five-hour outdoor concert with Dierks, Luke Bryan, Heidi Newfield and bunches of others.

Dierks’ rides—now in several cities throughout the U.S.—have raised more than $1.3 million for children’s hospitals.
